Sparky CPA started with a conversation with my brother.

Years ago, I was sat in a coffee shop in Ogden, Utah with my younger brother. He spent most of his adult life doing repairs and maintenance for an apartment complex our family built in the 1970s. He wanted more. He wanted a real trade, real skills, and work that challenged him.

Electrical work stood out. It paid well. The projects were interesting and high-stakes. And the path led to owning a business, not just a job.

There was one problem. Becoming a master electrician takes years of long hours. That would mean giving up the side businesses he ran on nights and weekends. Like me, he has an entrepreneur’s mindset. Walking away from that was hard.

So we made a plan. He would committed to the long, hard road of becoming a master electrician. Then, I would back him when the time came. I would help fund the business and act as the CFO to make sure the company was profitable, organized, and built to last.

While he worked through his apprenticeship and journeyman license, I went to work on my side. I studied the electrical contracting industry in depth. I learned what separates contractors who struggle from those who scale. Job costing, cash flow, taxes, pricing, and systems. What actually works. What doesn’t.

That research turned into a focus. That focus turned into Sparky CPA.

Before Sparky CPA, I founded and ran a CPA firm that specialized in helping business owners pay less tax using smart strategies. I grew that firm and sold it for a healthy seven-figure valuation. After that, I acquired and merged two Montana-based CPA firms with a partner and helped build a full-service accounting and tax practice. Once that firm could grow without my day-to-day involvement, I stepped away to start Sparky CPA.

Today, Sparky CPA exists for one reason: to help electrical contractors make more money, keep more of it, and run stronger businesses. I don’t just understand accounting and taxes. I understand electricians, how their businesses work, and where they get stuck. That’s why Sparky CPA was built.
